The Early Years of Beck, Page and Clapton
Beck,Page and Clapton, 俗にロック界三大ギターリストと呼ばれる三人ですが何故か名前の並ぶ順はいつも、Beck,Page and Clapton アルファベット順でも年の順でもないのに・・・ ベックとペイジは学生時代にベックの姉さんを通じて知り合い、既に音楽趣向で意気投合した友人であったことから、この二人は対で語られることが多いからでしょうか？ なお、Jimmy Page 1944年1月9日、Jeff Beck 1944年6月24日、Eric Clapton 1945年3月30日生まれと年の順ではなっています。 三人に共通していることはブルースが好きでブルースギター奏法から基礎が成り立っていて、なおかつ図抜けた腕前のギターリストであること。その後の多くのロックギターリストに影響を与え続けていることでしょう。 三人のミュージシャンのスタートはヤードバーズではなく、加入は既に特出していたギターテクを買われてのものでした。 クラプトンはルースターズ、ケーシージョーンズ&ジ・エンジニアーズ、ベックはトライデンツといったセミプロバンドで既に演奏することでいくらかの収入を得始めていたようですし、ペイジはスタジオミュージシャンとしてスタートしてかなりの収入を得ていました。ヤードバーズという存在が無くてもいづれは世に出ることに成っていたでしょう。実際三人のギターリストを拝さなかったら、中堅のビートグループとしての評価しか残らなかったかも知れません。当時のブリティッシュブルーズムーブメントから今なお名前を残しているギターリストは他にピーターグリーンとジェレミースペンサー、ミックテイラーくらいじゃないでしょうか？ ヤードバーズのオリジナルメンバーは Keith Relf、Paul Samwell-Smith、Chris Dreja、Jim McCartyのプロデビューメンバーに ギターリストとして Anthony Topham が居たのですが、３～４歳他のメンバーより若い彼は学生の身分、両親の反対にあいクラブで演奏することを断念したとか。その後釜として加入したのがキースレルフの学生時代の友人、クラプトンでした。 その後はハードロックファンなら先ず知っての通りの順々の交代劇。 ブルースバンドから離れてヒットソングを作ることに 専念し始めたバンドに嫌気がさしたクラプトン。バンドがヒットソングメーカーになろうがブルースバンドであろうがお構いなしにやりたいことをやり我が道を行くベック、そして完全主義者のページによってヤードバーズは消えていきました・・・ 最近(2003年春), クリスドレヤらが再結成させたらしいのですが、キースは既に故人、BP & Cは見向きもしない状態なので望懐感だけが漂っている感じもします（未聴の現在）。 ヤードバーズがプロとして活動していたのは1963年10月から1968年の7月までの５年間。そのうちクラプトン時代は63年10月～65年３月、ベック時代が65年３月～66年７月、ベック＆ペイジ時代、66年７月～66年11月、そしてペイジの時代が66年11月～68年７月迄というギターリストの変換に成っています。 一番短かったベックの時代に最も多くのヒット曲が生まれていますが、アルバム作品としてはどれも 散漫でまとまりがなく、各国バラバラの選曲でロックバンドらしからぬ記録です。シングルディスク中心だった古き時代の 形態が残っていますね。 一枚聴き通してまとまり感が有るのはライヴ録りの一枚目、『Five Live』でしょう。彼らの熱い情熱が充分伝わる素晴らしい記録だと思います。 全曲R&Bとブルーズのカバーなのですがアップテンポのが多く、ブルーズ系はキースのハープが主でR&B系でクラプトンのギターが表に出ているようです。それでも『Five Long Years』ではクラプトンのブルーズギターがかなり聴けます。曲としてはハウリンウルフの『Smokestack Lightnin'』が一番好きですがこれはキースのブルースハープがフューチャーされていてクラプトンの出番は殆ど有りません。 クラプトンがジョン・メイオールのもとへ去ったあとのベック時代にはどうやら本国内でもローリング・ストーンズに次ぐ人気ロックバンドになっていったらしいのですが、日本には（ヒットソングを放っていた当時）ほとんど紹介もされませんでした。解散後、ジェフ・ベックグループやレッドツェッペリンの登場と同時期に『ニューロック』シリーズの一枚として出たのが最初です。この『ニューロック』と言う言葉自体は面白いのですが、確かに新しい時代のロックの始まりが起ころうとしていた1970年初頭だったのです。第一期ジェフベックグループとレッドツェッペリンのそれぞれのアルバム１枚目・２枚目には現在のＨＲ/ＨＭの原点が有るように思えます。 ＨＲ独特のギターリフはヤードバーズ時代のベックの演奏に既に出てきますが、この時代のベックの演奏には他にもいろいろなロックギターの基礎とも言うべき音が随所に現れています。ベックはジェレミー・スペンサーと並びボトルネックギターの名手なのですが、クラプトンがやりたかったブルーズも、結構記録として残っているのが、ベックらしいところでしょう。（どれも素晴らしい出来です）。おとなしく人の言うことを聞いているかと思えばきっちり自分の主張も通しています。 クラプトンとベック、性格はかなり違うのでしょうが、どちらもナイーブで人間味が溢れていてその 音楽の遍歴について回る彼らの人生が音と共に素直に現れていて私には魅力的です。ギターを弾くために生まれてきた男達・・・ その点、ペイジは（私の見解ですが）ちょっと違ったタイプです。 彼の作り出す音は計算され尽くした完璧なサウンドです。 クラプトンが止めてベックに交代する直前、最初に誘われたのはペイジでした、彼はセッションミュージシャンとしての多忙さも有ったのでしょうが駆け出しのバンドとの実入りの差も躊躇させた原因のひとつとのこと。思いつきで行動するタイプではないのでしょう。 レッドツェッペリンというバンドの完成度の高さはやはりペイジ有っての事だと思います。 バンド在命時に残されたアルバムは本国では２枚、アメリカで３枚のみ（私の持っていないので「Roger The Engineer」から２曲少なくした編集盤「Over,Under,Sideways, Down」というアルバムがアメリカで出ています）他はすべて解散後の発表作ばかりです。 「Five Live Yardbirds」全曲と「For Your Love」から６～７曲が クラプトン、（「Sweet Music」はクラプトンもベックも参加していないとの話もあり不詳、「For Your Love」でクラプトンが弾いていないとの話もありますが・・・ＢＢＣでの「For Your Love」でベックのギターを聴いても、ただの伴奏しかしていないのでクラプトンも同じではとも思えます）後の音源ではソニーボーイⅡとの競演盤の音源と「Boom Boom」「Honey in Your Hips」が有ります。 ペイジのは「Little Games」以降の音源とＢＢＣセッションの一部など。他はベック時代の物なのですが、サンレモ音楽祭参加の時に イタリアで録音された「Questa Volta」「Pafff... Bum」はベックの気まぐれから彼は参加していないようです。 「For Your Love」の曲では「I'm Not Talking」「Putty」「I Ain't Done Wrong」「My Girl Sloopy」の４曲がベック時代の物。 「Happenings Ten Years Time Ago」「Stroll On（映画・欲望の挿入歌）」がベック・ペイジのツインギター、「Psych Daisies」が ベックのギター、ペイジのベースというパートになっています。 同じ曲を三人のプレイで聴けるのは「I'm a Man」位かも知れないのですが二人で聴き比べ出来る曲は数曲有ります。ただ「For Your Love」に収められたクラプトンと「Feedback」に有るベックの「I Ain't Got You」だけは判別がかなり難しい・・・。「Feedback」側には途中で効果音がオーバーダビングしてあるのは判りますが、ヴォーカルトラックはまるで同じです。ギターソロパートに違いが有るようにも思えるし同じようにも聞こえます・・・。 今、ヤードバーズの曲を聴き返してみると、やはりロックの「夜明け前サウンド」といった感じがもろにします。70年代～80年代のＨＲ/ＨＭに混ぜて聴いても遜色ないのはツインギター炸裂の「Stroll on」くらいです。同時期のビートルズやローリングストーンズが古さを感じさせないのは個性豊かなヴォーカルやリズム楽器陣が有ってのこと。 |
