アメリカ大陸には『ジャズ』『ブルーズ』『カントリー』といった他国なら『国を象徴するような』民族性の強い音楽がいくつか生まれていますが、広いアメリカ大陸の中で見ると、発祥地は地域的に隣接しています。中東部(アパラチア地方)から南東部周辺ですね。
アメリカの歴史を振り返ると、このアメリカ音楽発祥の地である大陸中東部から南東部というのが南北戦争で『南部軍の州』で有るという事が結びつきます。
家を離れて戦い続けた白人達と人権問題の中で人権を主張し続けていた黒人達が戦地の中で、それぞれの故郷（移民民族ですので）の音楽や黒人霊歌をベースに各々の想いが込められて生まれていった音楽だったのです。
そして南北戦争終結後半世紀を経てやっと『ジャズ』『ブルーズ』『カントリー』の原型である音楽にまで育っています。
その原型が、隣接する地域同士で融合しあって、ヒルビリー、ロカビリー、ロックンロール、ゴスペル、リズム&ブルーズ、ソウル・ミュージック等へと地域性を拡大しながら様々なジャンルへと変化を遂げて行っていますが、北へ上がらずに地域性を保ちながら少しずつ変化を遂げていった黒人の音楽も有ったのですね。
そこら辺りの黒人音楽が、Southern Soul・サザン・ソウル（個人的な発音はサザーン・ソウル）の元で、白人音楽であるカントリーの要素が感じられる曲も割と有ります。また、メンフィスのレーベル、STAXのリズムは白人が作り出していましたし、「黒人の音楽」に「白人の音楽スパイス」が散りばめられたようなそんな感じもします。
わたしが子供の頃に親しんだ洋楽はカントリー系のものが多かったので、カントリー風味の効いたスローやミディアムテンポのサザン・ソウルは何故か懐かしい気分にさせてくれます。
ところで、Southern Soul・サザン・ソウルという言葉が定着しだしたのは、多分1973〜74年位だったと思います。
現在なら初期サザン・ソウル・シンガーの代表とも呼べるオーティス・レディングがジミ・ヘンドリックスとモンタレー・フェスに出ていたときや、ウィルソン・ピケット(日本ではウォーカー・ブラザースとの競作として)の『ダンス天国』がラジオでガンガン流れていた時代には耳にしなかった言葉です。
おそらく、アメリカ南部出身のロックバンド（レーナード・スキナード、アウトローズ、オールマン・ブラザース等）が演奏するロックをサザン・ロックと呼び出した頃に、南部(主に南東部)録音・製作されたソウル・ミュージックをそう呼ぶように成ったのでしょう。
そして、とりわけサザン・ソウル・シーンでメンフィスとアラバマのマスル・ショールズで製作されたソウル・ミュージックは特有のバックサウンドに、表現力豊かな黒人シンガーが心地よく揺られながら熱唱するヴォーカルを乗せて、個性的なひとつの音楽ジャンルとして定着しました。
のめり込んだら抜け出せない魅力を持ち、全盛期を遠に過ぎても時代を超えて今なおファンを増やし続けています。
ネットに出ても有名どころの紹介サイトはかなり有りますし、プレスリーやビートルズ同様に『今更』の気も有りましたが、紹介の少ないコンピレーション物から初めて少しずつ書いていこうかなと思います。
わたしが、このソウル・ミュージックの虜になったのは、ベック、ペイジ、クラプトン、ピーター・グリーン等のブルーズ傾倒に影響されてシカゴ・ブルーズを聞き始めたのを基点としています。
（それまでは黒人音楽というと米ヒットチャート上位に上がった有名なR&B曲、ビートルズやローリング・ストーンズが取り上げて有名になったR&B曲とモータウン・サウンドにインプレッションズ(大好き)辺りしか聴かなかった---というか、聴ける機会が極少なかった---のです。）
ブルーズを聴き出して黒人音楽の魅力にはまり、日本ではあまり有名ではない（70年代初期の時代でという意味で）黒人ミュージシャンのレコードを探し回り始めるようになりました。
丁度、イギリスや国内で、シングル盤でしか出ていないような黒人ミュージシャンの曲を編集盤として次々に発売されていた時期で、心斎橋の阪根楽器店、堺のサムズショップなどに何度か足を運びブルーズやソウル系のレコード探索をしていました。
ロック系のレコードも併行して買っていた若い時期で、買えるのは極僅か、今から思うと貴重盤の買い漏らしも結構ありました。
（余談ですが、京都から育っていったWest Road Blues Bandの山岸さんや塩次さんも後に「阪根楽器店でブルーズのレコードを漁っていた」と話されていた記事を読んだことあります）
こうした中、サザン・ソウルに入り込んだ最初の盤として愛聴したのが『Soul Deep Vol.1』と題されたSOUL ON誌でおなじみ、桜井ユタカさんの解説がついた一枚のコレクションアルバムでした。
『Deep Soul 』ではなく、 『Soul Deep』、ボックストップスのヒット曲名と同じですね。（ボックストップスの最大ヒット『あの娘のレター-The Letter』はメンフィス・ホーンズの前身がバックを務めました）
アトランティック傘下の72年当時国内未紹介曲ばかりを集めたこのレコードの目玉は一曲目のジェームズ・カー。
この『Hold on』はジェームズ・カーの曲の中でもわたしが一番好きな曲で、ＣＤ全盛時になっても長い間、わたしとしてはこのＬＰでしか聴けなかった曲です。
解説の中で「カーの曲はGOLDWAXからＬＰが出ていますので是非聴いて下さい」と書かれていましたが、探しても探しても見あたらないＬＰ。やっと77年に日本のVivid Soundが発売したのですが、アトランティック原盤の『Hold on』は勿論、入っていませんでした。
オーティス・クレイの曲は日本公演盤でも聴ける（ＣＤ盤はカット）『Is It Over』のCotillionヴァージョンです、パーシー・スレッジのも聴き物です（勿論スロー・バラード）。

また、ワーナー・パイオニアは78年に『アトランティック・ソウル栄光の軌跡』シリーズとしてドン・コベイやアーサー・コンレイの単独物と一緒にVol.2とVol.3を発売しました。
取り急いで発売決定したのかジャケットデザインはおそまつでした。それにしても味気ないジャケットですね・・・
買い目ははジェームズ・カーの "I'll Put IT to You"でした、"Hold on"のＢ面としてアトランティックに残した２曲のうちの１曲。
オーティス・クレイのは引き続きCotillion原盤物です。

そして、1975年に究極のシリーズが出されまして、サザン・ソウルブームは日本中をおおって行く事に成ります。
ロカビリー系レーベルとしてスターしながら、ウィリー・ミッチェルの参入後ソウル系レーベルに変化してサザン・ソウルファンには忘れることの出来ない有名レーベルになったHiレコード。（個人的にも、Goldwax、Stax・VoltよりもHiの音の方が好みです）
そのHiレーベル所属シンガー達のコンピが１〜２集、ドン・ブライアントの単独コンピが第３集、Ｈｉレーベル傘下のＰａｗｎレーベル 所属シンガーのコンピが第４集と成っています。
第３集まではジャケットデザインがフラミンゴ・スタジオという桜井ユタカさんお気にいりのイラストレイター、湯村輝彦さんの集団でなんと銀紙でコーティングされたジャケット！反射して写真に撮りにくいこと撮りにくいこと。
ドン・ブライアントのはもう最高の一枚でＣＤ化された今でも特別な宝物。いつもこの曲順で聴きたいと思えるほど、何度も何度も繰り返し聴いた一枚です。
彼のは別項で載せるとして他の３枚の曲目紹介をしておきます。
Quiet EleganceとPhllip Mitchellが主です、特にQuiet EleganceはHiレーベル所属グループの中では特に有名なグループで人気が有ります。
Pawnレーベル物はWillie Clayton(Will Clayton)が半分を占めています。今も歌い続けて居る人らしくて上手いのですが、国内での知名度はかなり低いですね。

次のは76年に東芝ＥＭＩ編集の『ニュー・オーリンズ探訪シリーズ』としてブルーズ物主体に組まれて出されたシリーズ物の中からR&B系選曲集です。
音的にはサザン・ソウルらしくは有りませんが、アーマ・トーマスの曲が５曲も収録されていますのでサザン・ソウルファンにも興味有る編集盤でした。
アーマの曲は二十歳〜二十三歳頃のデビュー間もない頃、Minitへ移ってからの６枚のシングル曲からのセレクトです。

T.K. プロはアメリカ最南端にある『犯罪多発年として知られる（？）』マイアミで72年に設立された、ソウル・ミュージック系の音楽プロダクションで、数十の小さなレーベルを傘下に配して70年代に多数のメージャーヒットを送っています。
メンフィスやマスル・ショールズのサウンドとは明らかに異とし、ディスコ・ミュージック・レーベルのイメージがあるT.K. プロの作品群ですが、バラードタイプの曲になるとやっぱりソウルフルでサザン・ソウルのそれを感じます。
最初に知ったのはベティ・ライト（彼女のことは別項で）、街を歩いていてやたら耳にしたのがジョージ・マック レーの『Rock Your Baby』、以後、男女ともにカーリーヘアーが流行り、わたしも一時カーリーにして、河原町にあった 『カーネーション&カーネーション』というソウル喫茶に行きました。このお店に来る人たちは殆どがカーリー・ヘア！
これはベティ・ライト、ジョージ・マック レー、KC&ザ・サンシャイン・バンド等の有名どころ以外のシンガーを集めた日本盤コンピレーション。
ソウルフルなアン・セクストンやグエン・マックレーをこのコンピで知り、単独ＬＰを買うきっかけに成っています。

１集の方に収められたPercy Milemという人の歌が印象的です。未知なシンガーだと言うことですが、ＣＤ時代に入り単独アルバムが発売されていたようです。
O.V.Wrightが買い目でしたが、70年代という背景ではGoldwaxのマイナー音源はやはり揃えて置きたかった時代です。

79年に出たSTAX音源のレア物コレクション。全部で５枚発売されましたが、先ず欲しかったのはジミー・ルイスの入ったVol.3です。
彼の初期の音源は昔も今も収録されることが少なく、買って置いて良かったと思います。
マニア向けシリーズ物で三枚目だけ買うのは・・・という気持ちで買ったのが一枚目と二枚目。今となっては印象に残っている曲もそう無い感じで、ソウル・ミュージックばかりをカセットに入れた自選曲集にサンドラ・ライトの'Wounded Woman"を入れていた位でしょうか。

『Soul Deep』シリーズに次いで桜井ユタカさんが監修したアトランティック傘下レーベルからの新しいシリーズでしたが、わたしはこの一枚目しか買っていません。アーマ・トーマスがCotillionレーベルに残した唯一のシングル、 "Full Time Woman/She's Taken My Part" のＡ面曲が収められていました。
ＬＰとしてはＢ面の方が好みです。

『SOUTHERN SOUL BELLES』は、ドリス・アレンとトミー・ヤング、二人が入っていたので買ったＬＰです。
ドリスの'A Shell of Woman"は大好きでよく聴いた曲なのですが、シングルしか持っていませんし、彼女のアルバムが発売されたかどうかは不明です。
持っているのは２枚、"A Shell of Woman / Kiss Yourself for Me"と "I'll Just Keep on Lovin' You / Having Heavy in My Mind" で、共に[SSS International] というナッシュビルに有るレーベルで地域的柄カントリーフーリングが結構有ります。
トミー・ヤングは３曲入っていました。彼女は[Soul Power]というJewlレコード傘下のレーベルで６枚のシングルと１枚のアルバムを発売しています。持っているのはＬＰと"Hit and Run Lover/Take Time to Know Him"," Do You Feel The Same Way/Everybody's Got a Devil in Their Soul", "That's All a Part of Loving Him/She Don't Have To See You" のシングル３枚及び日本編集のＬＰ１枚です。
またＣＤ時代に入ってから見つけたコンピレーションＣＤに、SSS International音源集が有りました。それが『SOUTHERN SOUL SHOWCASE』、再び"A Shell of Woman"が有り、Clarence Murray、Johnny Soulなどシングルでしか聴けなかったシンガー以外に 大物Johnny Adamsと、Calvin Leavyが入っています。
Calvin Leavyの"Cummins Prison Farm"はブルーズ、『The Blues 誌』の日暮泰文さんが中心となって出発したP-VINE SPECIALレーベルが最初に出したのがカルヴィン・リーヴィーの紹介ＬＰ（紺色ジャケット）で76年当時かなり話題に成りました。
タイトル曲はブルーズですが、ＬＰの中にはモロにサザン・ソウルタイプの素晴らしい曲も有ります。(Nine Pound Steel など)
コレクションアルバムはいちいちタイトルを見るのが面倒ですが、イギリスや日本のはホント時々掘り出し曲を含んでいます。
追記：最近出たコンピレーションで再びＣＤ収録の"A Shell of Woman"を発見しましたので早速購入です。
『A Fine Time!:』と題されたＣＤはナッシュビル MINARET レーベルの作品を中心に集めた物で目玉はキャンディ・ステイトンがFame以前に吹き込んでいた"The Judgement/Candy & Billy"というデュエット曲。他にもドリス・アレンとジョン・ハミルトンのデュエット曲も収録されていました。

暫く更新しないままに成っていた Southern Soul Compilation 物、かなり溜まりましたので再度追記開始です。
まずは、James Carr, Percy Wiggins, Otis Clay, Sam Deesなどアトランティック（アトコ、コティリオン）録音でのアルバム未収録曲中心に選曲された『SANCTIFIED SOUL』。LP時代のワーナーパイオニアSOUL DEEPシリーズとダブル曲が有ります。
『THE JEWEL DEEP SOUL STORY』はルイジアナ州シュリーヴポート市に拠点を置くレーベルでブルース系レーベル [JEWEL]
とその系列レーベルのR&B、ソウル・ミュージック系の編集物3枚組『THE JEWEL DEEP SOUL STORY』。殆どテキサス州寄りのシュリーヴポートという土地からサザーン・ソウルの雰囲気は感じませんが、傘下に持つPaula、Ronn、Soul
Power といったレーベルにはやはり南部のソウルを感じ取れます。インディー系として結構マニアには有名なレーベルです。
Tommy young、Bobby Powell、Toussinto MacCall 等が目玉でしょうが持っているため、わたしには 持っていないMurco
に吹き込んだEddie Gilesの２曲が嬉しかったです。解説には記載なしですが、Murcoというマイナー・レーベルから`66年に出したシングル
"Losin' Boy" は少しヒットしたようです。間に挟まったルーベン・ベルの "You're Gonna Miss
Me" は完全ドハマりのサザーン・ソウル。
『TROUBLED WATERS』はMalacoレーベルの音源集、Malacoというレーベルはミシシッピ州の中心部ジャクソンを拠点に置くレーベルなのでテネシー州やアラバマ州をイメージする（わたしが勝手にイメージしてしまっているだけかもしれませんが）泥臭さはかなり稀薄に感じます。わたしが最初にMalacoを知ったのはドロシー・ムーアのLP『Misty
Blue』を買ったときでした。タイトルソングのシングル盤はビルボードのポップチャートでも３位まで上った曲です。南部の香りは薄かったですが彼女は根っからのミシシッピー州ジャクソンっ子、当にMalacoの星だったのでした。
ここでの目玉は勿論ジェイムス・カーで有名な "Hold On" の作者トミー・テイトが自ら歌ったな "Hold
On"です。（※後に単独アルバムが発売されました）
他にも熱唱のひとつマッキンリー・ミッチェルの"Town I Live In"も聴き物ですが、彼も南部出身ながら成功したのはシカゴなのでサザーン・ソウルシンガーと言うイメージは稀薄でしょうね。
『SHAKE WHAT YOU BROUGHT: SSS SOUL COLLECTION』はサブタイトル通りSSS International
レーベルの音源集です。このレーベルで思いつくのは Peggy Scott & Jo Jo Benson、 Johnny Adams あたりですが、ここにも上記２枚に収録されていたSam
Deesの音源が含まれていました。
ここでのわたしが購入のキッカケと成った曲はベティ・ラヴェットが歌う"Piece Of My Heart"。 これはアイズレー・ブラザースのヒット、ビートルズが更に有名にした『Twist
& Shout』の作者バート・バーンズが作った作品で、アーマ・フランクリン(アレサ・フランクリンのお姉さん)がイギリスで1967年にヒットさせ、翌年にジャニス・ジョプリンがカバーして更に有名になった曲（邦題：心のかけら）。ジャニスと比べるのは酷でしょうがベティの歌も味わい有ります。

『SOUL POWER STORY』と いう編集物CDが国内盤で出ました。Soul系Vivid Sound でなくP-Vine からだったというのが意外でしたが、私にとってはありがたい快挙です。 SOUL POWER というレーベルは ルイジアナ州に拠点を置くJewlレーベル傘下の小さなレーベルですが Tommie Young というサザーン・ソウルファンには外せないソウル・クィーンを世に出しました。
"Take Time To Know Him" など聴くと声質もながらジャニス・ジョプリンを思い起こします。他にも"Do You Still Feel The Same"を始め13曲CD化されました。
他にも George Perkins、Shay Holiday なども素晴らしい歌唱です。African Music Machine はインスト・ファンクバンド。

『TAKE ME TO THE RIVER: A SOUTHERN SOUL STORY 1961-1977』と題された３枚組75曲のサザーン・ソウル入門集が出ました。レーベルの壁を越えた凄い編集物です。代表シンガーの有名曲が並ぶ入門集ながら、レアな曲も含まれています。Eddy
Gilesなどは最たる物。
ただ、わたしの感覚ではMillie Jacksonはサザーン・ソウル・シンガーのイメージではないです。確かに出身はジョージア州ですがニューヨークで成功したソウル・クィーンです、わたしも大好きなシンガーで全アルバムを持っていますが、南部の香りはしないですね。ここで選ばれた『It
Hurts So Good 』はフィリップ・ミッチェル作なので曲自体での選曲かも知れません。
ちなみに「SOUL音楽的に南部というとテネシー、アラバマ、ルイジアナ、ジョージア、ミシシッピー、フロリダの各州あたりの事を言う」でほぼ間違いないでしょう。アーカンソーや南北カロライナ州には主たるレコーディングスタジオが無かった様です。南北戦争の南軍先陣イメージが強いカロライナ州はソウル・ミュージックとはかけ離れた白人社会という印象をわたしは持ってしまいます。

THE XL AND SOUNDS OF MEMPHIS STORY シリーズとして三部作が出ていました。Sounds of Memphis というレーベルは MGM 傘下の小さなレーベルですが、スペンサー・ウィギンズが Gold Wax, Stax に次いで録音したことや、ダン・グリア、ジョージ・ジャクソンの作品製作でサザーン・ソウルファンには名前が知られている会社です。アルバム単位の発売が少なくシングル中心でのコンピが作られるのは意義有ることです。日本のレコード会社よりイギリスの方が純粋にファン向けの質の高い編集物を作っていると思いますね。XL レーベルも同じく MGM 傘下のレーベルの様でこの会社のシングル盤は一枚も持っていません。（この３部作内でも３〜４曲の選曲です）
一作目『CAN'T BE SATISFIED』、二作目『PLAY THE GAME』、三作目『STEPPIN' STONE』どれも目玉は George Jackson Spencer Wiggins The Ovations でしょうが、Sounds of Memphis レーベルでのソングライター、プロデューサーとしてのクレジットが多い Dan Greer の曲が心に残ります。（彼の70年代ヴォーカルばかり集めたアルバムも最近出ました）
あと William Bollinger という人、Willie Bollinger という名前のシンガーと同じだと思われますがかなり珍しい選曲ですね。他も未発表曲多く、ER, Roman など MGM 傘下の極小レーベルの物も納められていますし、あきらかに「これがメンフィス・ソウル？」と思えるような曲調ナンバーもいくつか含まれています。Gold Wax 時代と比べてオベーションズはかなりモダーン・ソウルに成っていますが素晴らしい出来だと思います。
また、『PLAY THE GAME』の１曲目がジョージ・ジャクソンとクレジットされていますが、鈴木啓志氏は「あきらかに別人」と指摘されておられます。これはまずその通りでしょう。未発表曲の一つなのでテープ保管の際の記入間違いか何かでしょう。
『SOUTH SIDE SOUL - Vol.3』と題されたコレクションＣＤ、ベティ・ライトやヘレン・スミスなどマイアミ系シンガーが名を連ねていたので購入したのですがかなりマイナーな会社発売のＣＤです。カーラ・トーマス（"I Can't Take It" はAtlanticに吹き込まれた1962年のシングル曲）などメンフィスのシンガーも入っていますが、テリー・ハフのスペシャル・デリヴァリーなどに代表されるスィート系が多く収録されていました。ラストのアスターズの曲はStax音源でカナリレア物でしたマイナーな会社のＣＤっぽく、読みこめないＣＤデッキもありました（そういえば９０年代初期のＣＤには時々有りました）。

『FAME STUDIOS STORY 1961-197』という３枚組豪華ブックレット綴じ。ウーン！持っている曲多しなのにやっぱり買ってしまわずにいられないセット物です。これは前述の『TAKE ME TO THE RIVER: A SOUTHERN SOUL STORY 1961-1977』と似ています。ただ、ここでは完全にソウル・ミュージックというカテゴリーから外れていると思われる楽曲も納められています。【60年代初頭から70年代初期からの選曲】なのと 【［Fame レーベルで発売された］に拘っていない】という事でそれは当然だと思いますが。
ダン・ペン、スプーナー・オールダムといったFame レーベルのシンガー達に多くの曲を提供してきたソングライター達白人を始め初期にスタジオでギターを弾いていたらしいトミー・ロウ（大好きな"シェイラ"のヒットを放ったポップ・シンガー）、オズモンズなども入っています。ロック・ファンにはボックス・トップス、ジャニス・ジョップリン等によりダン・ペンの名前はソウル・ファンより先に知られていた訳で、彼の初期のＬＰもロック盤として出ておりました。彼の書く曲はどれも好きでダンのレコード、ＣＤは全部持ってはいますが彼がビートルズのことを「ゴミの様だ」とかきつい言葉で毛嫌いを顕わにしたという記事をどこかで読み、人柄は好きで無くなりました。でも彼の書く曲はやはり好きです。
アーサー・コンレイの "I Can't Stop (No, No, No)"もダンの作品ですが、ロック・シンガーが歌っても似合う曲ですし、初期のローリング・ストーンズ辺りならまずピッタリでしょう。
サザーン・ソウルというサウンド・イメージに近づいてくるのは３枚目から。キャンディ・ステイトン、ジョージ・ジャクソン、ウィリー・ハイタワーと並んでいます。またここでジェイムズ・ゴヴァンというシンガーを初めて聴きました。
異色はトラヴィス・ワーマック、ボビー・ジェントリーといった白人のスワンプ畑の人たちが混ざってることですが、この曲などもマッスル・

再度Fame音源のシリーズです。 マッスル・ショールズのFAMEスタジオで録音されながら、発表されなかった楽曲はどうやらまだまだ有るらしく、徐々に発掘されるとのこと。
白人のエンジニア、Rick Hall（リック・ホール）がスタジオ・ミュージシャンとして白人ばかりを揃えて、このレコーディング・スタジオをオープンしたのは1960年。レーベルとしてのFameレーベルを創設したのは翌 '61年。アレサ・フランクリンや エタ・ジェイムズ等はAtlantic、Chessとそれぞれの専属レコード会社が、南部アラバマに来させて、このスタジオでここのスタジオ・ミュージシャンを使って録音して発売することも多く、FAMEスタジオ・サウンド自体が魅力のひとつだったと今更ながらに感慨深いです。
『HALL OF FAME - RARE AND UNISSUED GEMS FROM THE FAME VAULTS』と題された第１集は 6.Jackieなるティーンネイジ・ポップス風もあれば、7.ジョー・サイモンのサム・クック風、9.フィリップ・ミッチェルのインプレションズ風、（特に続く10.エンターティナーズもモロインプレッションズ！）と結構楽しめましたが、サザーン・ソウルとしては18.無名の男性シンガーとして選出された『Love Changes A Man』が掘り出し物でした。 録音シンガー名も記入されないまま倉庫奥でお蔵になっていた曲とは思えないです。
続いて出された第２集『HALL OF FAME VOL 2 MORE RARE AND UNRELEASED GEMS FROM THE FAME VAULTS』はこれまた無名の女性シンガーとして発掘されたなかなかの佳曲から始まりました。3曲目 "Long Ago" は良い曲だけれど(ダン・ペン作)聴いたことあると思っていたらボビー・パターソンのジェット・スター音源集でした。Ben and Spence盤もBellレーベルからシングルで出ていたようです。また、7曲目 "I Can't Stop (No No No) "はやたら60年代ロックっぽいと感じたらこちらもダン・ペン作でした。この第２集の中でわたしが特に気に入ったのはフィリップ・ミッチェルの歌う２曲"Fool For A Woman","How Much More Can A Poor Man Stand"。ソングライターとして先に名を出した人ですがその歌唱も魅力的です。特に高音部が好きです。
同シリーズ３集目が出ました。『HALL OF FAME VOL.3 MORE RARE AND UNRELEASED GEMS FROM THE
FAME VAULTS』。１枚目がスタジオ外観写真。２枚目がミキサー室のリック・ホールの写真。そして今回はリックとキャンディ・ステイトンの旦那さんクラーレンス・カーターと並んだ写真。中の解説部分にジョージ・ジャクソンとダン・グリアが並んで微笑んでいる写真が掲載されていましたが、二人とも若くて、初々しくてとても温かみを感じた写真でした。
"L-O-V-E Love / Ben and Spence",".I Done Run Out" なども良かったですが、注目はハーマン・ムーア(Herman
Moore)という人。知らなかった歌手ですが、ここでの"Come On Home","Love Light"
を聴くと、もっと他の曲も聴いてみたいと思います。
ベン＆ スペンスの "A Stone Loser"（ダン・ペン作）はモンキーズでヒットした "Steppin'
Stone" とそっくりでした。モンキーズの方はトミーボイスとボビーハートのコンビ作で66年のヒット。どちらかが影響うけたのでは無いでしょうか？
ここでもフィリップ・ミッチェルの "Hail! HaIl! The Gang's All Here" はGoodでした。

またまた発売されたSounds of Memphis レーベルの音源集 。『LOST SOUL GEMS FROM SOUNDS OF MEMPHIS』これは以前に出た【THE XL AND SOUNDS OF MEMPHIS STORY】よりも良いんじゃないの？同じレーベル集なのに後から出た方が聴き応えあるというのは凄いです。ここでも目立つのはダン・グリア作の楽曲の良さ。１曲目カール・シムス（Carl Sims）の『Pity A Fool 』からダン・グリア作です。この曲以前のシリーズ１枚目でBarbara and the Brownsのヴァージョンが納められていました。ここでもWilliam Bollingeの曲が２曲選ばれています。サザーン、サザーンしていていいですねぇ。声質が好みです。女性シンガーではアーマ・ショウ（Erma Shaw）という人、知らなかった人ですがもっと他の曲も聴きたくなりました。
表カバージャケの写真はVisionという３人組。録音時代的に最も新しいのでしょうか？サウンドの統一感がちょっとズレた感じがしましたが。
ジョージ・ジャクソンは文句なしでこのところ連続で単独の発掘盤が出ていまして順に買いそろえました。
続編『MORE LOST SOUL GEMS FROM SOUNDS OF MEMPHIS』 が出ました。今度のも既発曲は４曲。他は初出らしいです。ここでのダン・グリアの
"Since My Baby Left Me"、何故かしわがれ声で歌っていますが、サム・クックが歌いそうな曲。またまた収録されましたWilliam
Bollinger。この人の声は・・・また書きますが好きです。
Rudolph Taylor "Misery"、Barry Jones "That's How I Take
To You"、と続く９〜10曲目は凄くいいですが次の11曲目はガクンッ。ラストのキャロル・ロイドが歌うのはジョニー・リバースの大ヒット曲
"Poor Side Of Town邦題：僕らの街" ではないですか。彼の作品のスローからミディアムタイプの曲は凄く好きです。"Under
Your Spell Again"、"Swayin' to the Music"、"Baby I Need
Your Lovin'"など他の人もよく取り上げています。彼はロック・ミュージシャンですが元々はルイジアナ出身なのでウエスト・コーストへ出て行っても、作る曲のどこかに南部色が出ています。キャロル・ロイドのヴァージョンは、ちょっと物足らなく感じました。

英KENTがまた南部のソウル音源を編集して新しい企画物コンピを出しました。というかサザーン・ソウル自体がカントリー・バッキングにR & Bヴォーカルを乗せて発展してきたジャンルだけにわざわざこのようなタイトル物を作ろうとする会社が無かったのかも知れません。ただ、南部音楽にのめり込んだリスナーが自分なりのフェヴァリット・テープを作るとき、この類の選曲をすることは多々あるでしょう。KENTスタッフのマニアックさがモロに出た企画物ですね。
『BEHIND CLOSED DOORS』、Atlantic及びその傘下レーベル他 Hi,Stax,Goldwaxなどのお馴染みのレーベルにCapitol,Dot等の大手レーベルからも選ばれています。既発曲ばかりながらカントリーも好きなわたしはやはり買ってしまいました。歌唱と楽曲合わせてのベストトラックはアン・ピーブルズの "Hangi' On"、キャンディ・ステイトンの "He Called Me Baby"。"Hangi' On" はフォーク・ロックバンドとしてのバーズのオリジナル・メンバー、ジーン・クラークとの共演で有名になったフォーク・デュオ、ゴスディン・ブラザーズの曲。フォークというよりかなりカントリー寄りです。（バーズ自体はジーンが抜けてグラム・パーソンズ加入後にカントリー・ロックに変化していったのですが）
キャンディ・ステイトンの "He Called Me Baby" は大姉御パッツィ・クラインのヒット曲。アルバムタイトルの『Behind Closed Doors』はチャーリー・リッチのヒット。ここで歌っているのはブルース界とソウル界にまたがって活躍しているギターリスト・シンガー、リトル・ミルトン。歌い方にブルース・フィーリングがちょこちょこと感じられます。４曲目を歌うエスター・フィリップスも70年代にはCTI/KUDOからクロスオーバー、フュージョン系のシンガーに変化して言った人ですが根はブルース・フィーリングを持った人でした（早く亡くなられています）

という曲はCarl & Pearl Butlerというカントリー・デュオの'62年のヒット曲（チャート・クレジットはカール・バトラーさんのソロ名義）
あと、エタ・ジェイムスの "All I Have To Offer You" （ルーヴィン・ブラザースのオリジナル）もさすがです。タイトル曲の

"Statue Of A Fool"、この人もテンプスの時代からかすれ気味の声にどこか人を惹きつける魅力がありましたがここでも聴き入ってしまいます。
三作目も出ました。今回はハンク・ウィリアムスの『COLD COLD HEART』を冠しています。ここではまずトップのパーシー・スレッジ。曲はエルヴィス・プレスリーのＬＰ『Elvis
in Memphis』での名唱がある "True Love Travels on a Gravel Road（当時の邦題：恋はいばらの道を）"
パーシーのも良いです。あとは意外なフュージョン畑のジョージ・ベンソン、ブルース系のリトル・ミルトンが良かったです。ジョージ・ベンソンはギターリストとしてジャズからフュージョン、そしてヴォーカルをやるように成ってブラック・コンテンポラリーと活躍のジャンルを変えてきた人で甘いヴォーカルは結構聴けます。リトル・ミルトンはブルースとソウルを分けることなくやっておられて所属会社毎にサウンド変化が見られます。この
"Whenever You Come Around" はMalacoへの復帰時の録音物で良い感じです。
もう一曲、Mike James Kirklandが Bo Kirkland 名義でルース・ディヴィスと組んだアルバム 『BO & RUTH』からの一曲
"Easy Lovin'"。このゆったり感はマイアミ・ソウル風でもありますが、メンフィスの香りもします。どこかに懐かしさを感じます。（以前友人に話したことありました。テネシーの音楽を聴くと懐かしさを感じるわたしの前世はこの地で暮らした人だったんだと・・・笑われましたけど）
シュープリームスはそういえばカントリー・ソングアルバムを作っていたんだとふと思い出しました。
珍しいところではジョニー・アダムスがRonレーベルに残した２枚のシングルのうちこのCDタイトルにもなった "Cold Cold Heart"
が入っています。

おなじみ英KENTの編集物ボックスで気を惹かれるＣＤがまた出ました。２００８年発売の『TAKE ME TO THE RIVER: A SOUTHERN SOUL STORY 1961-1977』で漏れた曲を集めた続編といえるものです。
３枚組の１枚目はAtlantic-aAtoco系 Stax、Fame、Ronn、Backbeatなどサザーン・ソウルファンならお馴染みのレーベルのメンフィス、マッスルショールズ物、２枚目は地域的にもっと広げながらもサウンドがモロ・サザーンスタイルの曲を集めていますので、１枚目の現地録音物より南部スタイルを味わえます。（１枚目（クリス・クリストファ-ソン作の "Sugerman" サム・ベイカー、"Sure as Sin"（ジニー・グリーン）などは南部サウンドというよりソウルフィーリングすら希薄なのですから）。
わたしにとっての２枚目の目玉はマイアミ・シンガー、ヘレン・スミスなのですが、驚いたのは"ジュディのごまかし"の全米ナンバーワンヒットを放ったJohn Fred & The Playboys の曲が入っていること。もちろん白人バンドです。
もともとがルイジアナ州の出身でスワンプ系の音楽をしていたバンドなので南部フィーリングを持ち合わせていて不思議ではないのですが"ジュディのごまかし"はバブルガム・ミュージックの代名詞のような曲でしたから・・・
ヘレン・スミスはマイアミのソウル・シンガーでDeep Cityレーベルに吹き込んだシングル45'ｓがどれもプレミア付きで取引されるほどの味のあるシンガー。（Deep Cityでのシングル寄せ集めＣＤが出るとかで、予約していたのに１年待って「入荷見込ナシ」となってしまいました）それでも数曲ずついろいろなコレクション物で聴くことは出来ます。
ここに収められた "A Woman Will Do Wrong" は「Phil L.A. Of Soul 」レーベルに吹き込まれた物で素晴らしい曲です。アーマ・トーマスやディーディー・シャープ、エスター・フィリップスなどカヴァーも多い曲です。

『MASTERPIECES OF MODERN SOUL』はモダーン・ソウルと銘打ったタイトルで南部のソウル系ではないと思っていましたが、デニス・ラサールがチョイスされていますので、録音地限定でなくとも南部録音音源も収録されていました。超有名ミリー・ジャクソンの曲は`73年発売のセカンド・アルバム『It Hurts So Good』収録曲なのですが、そのアルバムは殆どがニューヨーク録音で、数曲Muscle Shoalsでの録音が含まれているらしいのでこの "Don't Send Nobody Else" はそうなのでしょうか？
初めて聴いたヴァーノン・ギャレットの "To Be a Part of You" は良かったです
『MASTERPIECES OF MODERN SOUL Volume 2』はシリーズ化されたのか続編が出ましたが、こちらの方がアルバムとしては気に入りました。Kent-Danceというレーベル名からも想像付きそうなダンサブルな曲主体に成っています。The Pretendersという英国ロック・バンドと同じ名前のグループの曲が入っています（女性一人男性三人の黒人グループらしい）。"You're Gonna Lose Me"では何故かジャズ・トランぺッターのフレディー・ハバードが間奏でソロを吹いています。歌っているのは当時のFantasyレーベル押しの新人シンガーらしいです。このアルバム内で一番の有名どころはローラ・リーでしょうが、可もなく不可もなしの曲が選ばれています。そして、アルバム・クレジットでは [Unkown Artist] とされているのが、ジョージ・ジャクソンだと判明しています。彼の編集アルバム『 In Memphis 1972-77』にこの曲が収録されました。

SSS International はソウル・ファンにはお馴染みのナッシュヴィル拠点のレーベルですが、GSFというニューヨークのインディー・レーベル(`71年〜`75年の4年間程だけ営業)。著名なシンガーはロイド・プライスなどで、ドロシー・ムーアも一時期録音していた模様。10曲目からの後半11曲がそうですが、すべて`72年、`73年の2年間の曲です。どのジャンルにおいてもその土地独特のサウンドを持つのは広大なアメリカならではですが、後半のNY録音曲もかなり南部のサウンドに近い曲が選ばれています。気に入ったのは "If It Ain't One Thing, Its Another" (Oscar Irving)とアップ・テンポの "My Hang Up Is You" (Skull Snaps)。スカル・スナップスはFunk系のバンドですがこのアルバムに入っていても違和感なしでした。
キャンディ・ステイトンがカヴァーに成った『MASTERPIECES OF MODERN SOUL Volume3』、同シリーズ3作目。アルバムも出しているキャンディ・ステイトン-三曲目、トミー・テイト-10曲目はやはり聴き応えありますが、"Any Fool Can Feel It"(Marshall McQueen)はかなり気に入りました。Vol.3ともなると選出曲も若干落ちる気もします。

ミシシッピー州ジャクソン市のMalacoレーベルのコンピレーション物が数点。`60年代に設立されながらヒットを連発したのは`80年代に入ってからながら、このレーベルもサザーン・ソウルファンにはお馴染みのレーベルです。
『MALACO SOUL SISTERS』はジューエル・バスとドロシー・ムーアの女性シンガー二人をフィーチャーしたアルバム。ドロシーの方は個人アルバムがありますがジューエルの方は現在のところソロ・アルバムを見かけません。日本では6曲目 "Let Your Love Rain Down on Me 邦題：恋の雨に濡れて" がシングル発売もされていた模様（Ｂ面は"In and Out of Love 邦題：恋は気まぐれ"）。私的には同タイプの ".I Tried It and I Liked It" の方が好みです。ドロシーの方はAvco (旧Cameo-Parkway)やGSFといったレーベルでの録音物で、版権を移動したのでしょうか？未発表曲3曲も含めてすべて`70年代前半の若かりし頃の録音です。どの曲も良いです。白人ながらジャクソンで生まれ育ったポール・ディヴィスの作品 "Same Old Feeling"、"Two of a Kind" が聴きもの、ダン・ペンの曲でボックス・トップスがヒットさせた同名ながら異曲の "Cry Like a Baby" も良いです。
『MALACO DEEP SOUL COLLECTION 〜RARE & UNRELEASED SINGLES』ジューエルとドロシーの曲は『MALACO SOUL SISTERS』とダブります。トミー・テイトの曲は彼の編集物アルバムで既に発表済みの物。 ベティ・ジョンソンとチャールズ・ウォーレンのデュエット曲 "You Can't Find Love"、エディ・ホーストンの "That's How Much (I Love You) "が`70年代の音を感じて気に入りました。アップではC.P.Loveの "Never Been In Love Before"が良い感じ。
『MALACO BASIC - REAL SOUL'N BLUES SPIRITS』はJames Bradley以外はかなりのアルバムを出している有名どころ。それぞれのMalaco録音音源からの選曲で掘出し物はないようですが、通して聴くとMalacoの味を感じます。ただラスト2曲、ドロシーの一曲と最後のジェイムス・ブラッドリーはフィラデルフィア・ソウル内のソフト＆メロウ・ナンバーでしょう。
『SOUTHERN SOUL CLASSICS OF MALACO - WARM & TENDER』はMalacoの入門用アルバムの様式で完全に南部的な音を感じない曲がかなり入っています。『Woman To Woman』の有名作を持つシャーリー・ブラウンの "Ain't Nothin' Like the Lovin' We Got " が最高の聴きものでした。

『MUSCLE SHOALS: SMALL TOWN BIG SOUND』Fameで有名なマッスル・ショールズのスタジオで作り出された音は、南部の音楽が好きな人には愛してやまない「サウンド」でしょう。ソウル系は勿論、サザーン・ロックの分野でもそのサウンドは生きています。
この音が好きな人は確実に虜状態に成ってしまいます。このアルバムはこのスタジオから生まれた名曲の数々を他人がカヴァーした物を収録していますが、ソウル・シンガーでない人が殆どです。それでも聴くとジャンルを超えてサザーン・ソウルそのものを感じることができます。本国で言われている [Blue-Eyed Soul] というジャンルでしょうか。エタ・ジェイムスの名曲をカヴァーしているグレイス・ポッターは若い白人・女性シンガーですがソウルフルなヴォーカルです。"Steal Away" ジミー・ヒューズが`60年代前半にFameに録音した名曲でイーライ・ペパーボーイ・リードも白人ながらソウルフルな人です。ロック系ではスティーヴン・タイラーの "" は本家のR・ストーンズよりロックしていて聴きものです。
