Peggy Lee (Norma Deloris Egstrom)
| ペギー・リーさん、時代背景などまるで浮かばない時代である1920年に生まれておられます（和暦でいうと大正９年）。 プレスリーでさえ'35年生まれですので、多分わたしにとってのフェヴァリット・ミュージシャン中では最年長だと思います。 いつかは書きたいと思っている人たちの中ではジャッキー・マクリーン:'32年生まれ、マイルス・デイヴィス:'26年生まれとさすがにジャズ畑で年長者さんが多いですが、ペギーさんよりはお若いです。 わたしはジャズ喫茶がやたら多い町で育ったために、ジャズを聴きだしたのは結構早く高校時代からに成ります。 BIG BOY、マンホール、52番街、YAMATOYA、しあんくれーる、ZABO、ダウンビート、サンタクロース、Impulse、 ブルーノート・・・今、即座にざっと想い出すだけでも結構出てきました、他にもまだまだ有った筈です。 ブルーノートのようにアルコール主体のお店は少なく、殆どが大学生相手に『コーヒー一杯でジャズのお皿が聴ける』といった"学生街の喫茶店"らしさを持っていました。特徴は窓のない密室でJBL-Olympus だとか ALTEC-A7 などの大型スピーカーを使い大音量で鳴らされて居た事と、煙草の煙がモウモウとしていた事でした。中学生で出入りすれば中学生で、高校生で出入りすれば高校生で煙草を覚えてしまう確率が相当に高い様な場所でしたが、スネかじりの生徒の身が深夜ラジオでは聴けないジャズＬＰが聴けるとても居心地の良い場所でした。 （今なら防毒マスクでもしないと長居は出来ませんが） ZABOはニュージャズ・フリージャズ系中心、BIG BOYは新譜中心といったお店のカラーはそれぞれ有りましたが、だいたい何処もヴォーカル物が回る確率（リクエスト可能ながら）は極端に少なかったと思います。そんな中、マル・ウォルドロン、ジャッキー・マクリーンの『Left Alone』を通じてビリー・ホリディに感心を持ち、ジャズ・ヴォーカル物も徐々に聴くように成っていきました。 ペギー・リーはビートルズのポールがデビュー当時の記事の中で、好きなシンガーのひとりとして挙げて居ましたので名前だけは知っていましたがレコードを買うきっかけは『スウィング・ジャーナル誌』で人気のジャズ・ヴォーカルアルバムがいくつか紹介されて居たときにペギー・リーの"Black Coffee"が有ったことでした。 コーヒーを飲みながらジャズを聴き、徐々にコーヒー好きに成っていった矢先のこのタイトルには惹かれました。 ただ、聴き始めるとタイトルソングより、コール・ポーターの"I've Got You Under My Skin"や"My Heart Belongs to Daddy（私の心はパパのもの）"などのスィング感が有る方が気に入りました。他の曲も気に入って（特にこのＡ面はほんと好きです）ペギー・リーを聴くきっかけと成りました。 彼女はスェーデン系の血を引き、1920年5月20日ノース・ダコタ州のジェイムズタウン（JAMESTOWN, NORTH DAKOTA）で生まれ、2002年１月21日の午前８時頃、ロスのベル・エア（Bel Air，LA）の自宅で心筋梗塞による心臓発作の為に亡くなられました。 ４歳の時にお母さんと死に別れると、お父さんはノーマ（ペギーの本名）を継母に預けて去ってしまったとのこと。後の明るく強い姿を見るとき、幼くして両親を亡くした『悲運な女の子』の面影は有りませんが、芯の強さはこの頃にまで遡って培われたのでしょう。 彼女の唱法の特徴はこうした精神的な強さが良く現れた『姉御肌』的な歌い方に尽きると思います。ちょっとした女の格好良さを感じます。 1941年７月にシカゴで歌っていたときにベニー・グッドマンにスカウトされ、ヘレン・ウオード(Helen Ward)、マーサ・ティルトン(Martha Tilton) 、ヘレン・フォレスト(Helen Forrest)らに継いで、ベニー・グッドマン楽団の専属歌手として迎入れられました(Peggy Lee という名を考えたのはベニー・グッドマンだったらしいです)。翌月には録音を開始された20代前半のその録音はどれも素晴らしい出来です。 そしてその後、楽団のギタリストだったデイヴ・バーバーと結婚して一時歌手生活を中断しましたが、一年ほどで復帰、ソロ歌手として再出発しました。デイヴ・バーバーとは10年足らずで離婚するも、一緒の時に共作で作った歌作り生かし、その後もいくつかの曲を自作しています。 ビッグバンド出身の歌手で大きな成功を収めたのは女性では彼女が一番でしょうし、男性のフランク・シナトラ（ハリー・ジェームス楽団の専属歌手から）の成功にも負けないくらいです。 また彼女もシナトラ同様映画に出たりポピュラーソングを歌うようになり、一部のジャズファンから「ジャズシンガーではない」との評価を受けるように成ってしまいましたが、いろいろなジャンルの曲を歌いながらも、全キャリアを通じて眺めてみると個人的な見解ながらやはりジャズ・シンガーであるペギー・リーです。 ビリー・ホリデイ、サラ・ヴォーン、エラ・フィッツジェラルドあたりが女性ジャズ歌手のビッグ・スリーである事は大抵の人が納得するでしょうが、五人挙げると成るといろいろと別れるところではないでしょうか？ ダイナ・ワシントン、ベティ・カーター、カーメン・マックレーなどが候補に挙がりますが、勿論ペギー・リーを挙げる人もかなりおられるでしょう。 ジャズ・ヴォーカルを語るとき必ずその名が出るのですからやはり偉大な"ジャズ・シンガー"であったのだと思います。 これは絶えず変化をし続けた歌い手さん達の作品が、後年に成って「どれが代表作か？」などと語られるときの作品にもかなり依存するのでしょう。ペギー・リーの場合は60年代前半までのジャズを歌っていた時期の物が代表作に挙げられる事が多いのも要因のひとつだと思います。 反対はフランク・シナトラやナット・キング・コールがポピュラー歌手として語られる事でしょう。 50数年間に渡り録音・発売された相当な数の彼女のレコードは何処の国の物でも再発されれば、こまめにチェックして買い続けてきましたが、それでも全部のＬＰレコードを揃えられないままに（『MIRRORS(1975年発売)』は完全に買い漏らし）ＣＤ時代へと移行してしまいました。 ＣＤ時代に入り、買い漏らしていた物が再発されて、買う事が出来いくつか聴く事出来ました。このページをアップする段階で未聴のオリジナルアルバムは６〜７種だけと成りました。 |
| <The Early Years 1941-1942> ペギー・リーの初吹き込みは1941年８月15日の"Elmer's Tune"で以降'43年３月頃までベニー・グッドマン楽団のバンド・シンガーとして歌っていました。 この時期に正式発売された曲は32曲で、どれも当然SP時代の物ですので、アルバム形式で発売される事はずっとずっと後の事でした。 （ちなみにSPレコードはStandard Playing（LP主体に成ってからはShort Playing)の略であり、LPは Long Playing、の略と回転数ではなく再生時間の長さを表した物です。Standardから"延長された再生"という意味で中間の45回転盤がExtended Playing=EPと命名されました。） 1972年にCBS・SONYから発売された『Elmer's Tune』は ベニー・グッドマン楽団と一緒に録音した33曲のうち発売された32曲すべてが収録された（未発表曲は"Let's Say a Prayer"というラストレコーディングだったらしいですが、マスターテープに異常があったとか。その後アメリカで起こったミュージシャン・ストライキの為に再録もされず、発売もされないままで終わった様です）宝物のようなアルバムです。 14年後にコンパクトディスクで聴き所を選んだ16曲盤が再発されましたが、14年間の間にマスターテープの劣化が有ったのか、アナログ盤の方が音質は優れています。 '99年に音源不良の"Let's Say a Prayer"や楽団退団後に時々競演したライブ音源などを加えたＣＤがアメリカで発売されていたのですが、買い漏らしています。 "Elmer's Tune"、"Why Don't You Do Right?"、"Let's Do It"、"On the Sunny Side of the Street"などが特に好きですが、どれもこれも素晴らしく貴重な録音です。 |

| <1944-1952> 結婚の為に1943年にベニー・グッドマンの楽団を退団して、一旦家庭に入るもすぐに復活、'44年にはCapitolと契約して、以後'52年までCapitolに在籍しました。 その後一旦、Deccaに移籍後再びCapitolに戻りましたので、この初期の方を通常『第一期Capitol時代』と呼ばれています。 まだまだ、ＳＰ全盛時代でしたが、夫君であるデイヴ・バーバーと共作した曲を、次々と発表してヒットさせ人気歌手へと上り詰めました。 20代中盤から30代前半の頃ですし、女性として最もイキイキして居た時代ですね。 1948年にＬＰが開発されて'50年代以後本格的なＬＰ時代に入るのですが、この第一期Capitol時代に吹き込まれた録音のうち12曲だけが（ＬＰとしての）正式にオリジナルアルバム（Rendez-vous）として発売されただけです。 1974年に日本独自で編集されたアルバムでは４曲追加されましたが、おそらく120曲近く吹き込まれた最初のcapitol時代の音源はＣＤは勿論、ＬＰ時代にも再発されませんでした。（マスター不良か破損でしょうか？） この1944年-1954年はラジオ全盛時代でペギー・リーも相当ラジオで歌っていたようです。ＬＰの『You Can Depend on Me』、『If I Could Be with You』、『Easy Listening』そして、ＣＤの『It's a Good Day』はすべてラジオ放送の音源です。 ちなみに『Easy Listening』のカヴァージャケットに写っている中でギターを持った人がデイヴ・バーバー、ペギー・リーは都合三回結婚して三回とも離婚しましたが、子供さんは一回目のデイヴ・バーバーとの間に産まれた女の子ひとりだけでした。 |

| <1952-1956> デイヴ・バーバーと別れた後心機一転、Capitolから移籍して４年半ほどの間にかなりDeccaレーベルに録音を残しました。 ただアルバムとしての発売はDeccaを去ってからの'57年から'64年迄 も続きＬＰ化は小出し発表の形に成っています。 ペギー・リーがジャズファンから支持される時代というのは概ねこの'53年から'63年位の10年間で、ジャズ演奏に乗っての傑作録音が多く集中しています。 反面、映画女優・声優やソングライターとして名を広めるなどポピュラリティーな部分も拡大していきました。 このDecca時代のベストアルバムは勿論『Black Coffe』だと云う事に成りますが、『Dream Street』もジャズファンには結構人気有ります。囁くようなタイプのバラード"What's New?"、"It Never Entered My Mind"などでは彼女の巧さが光りますし、スィング感有るコール・ポーターの"It's All Right with Me"などは、さりげなくナチュラルに歌いながらも軽快にドライブさす独特の唱法は相変わらずです。『Black Coffe』程に話題に成らないのはしっとりした曲が多い選曲の問題でしょう。 そして、『PETE KELLY'S BLUES(皆殺しのトランペット)--出演も』、『LADY AND THE TRAMP(わんわん物語)--声優出演』と映画のサウンドトラック盤が２枚この時代に有ります。『皆殺しのトランペット』はジャズでElla Fitzgeraldの歌も３曲収録された聴き物です（ペギー・リーの演技はアカデミー助演女優賞にノミネートされたそうです）。『わんわん物語』は映画自体がヒットしましたし、きっとジャズを聴かない若い・幼い世代にもその歌声を印象づけたに違いないでしょう。個人的にはジャズソングの"That Fellow's a Friend of Man"が好きです。 『SEA SHELLS(貝がら)』はハープとハープシコードのみの伴奏というジャズではない異色作、人気有りますがわたしは数回しか聴いていません。 続く『MISS WONDERFUL』、『LOVER』、『THE FABULOUS』はペギーがDeccaを離れてから発売されたアルバムでどれもヒットソング主体に作られた物ですが、先の二枚はジャズスタンダードも多く、楽しめます。 ガーシュインの"They Can't Take That Away from Me(誰も奪えぬこの想い)"、コール・ポーターの"Just One of Those Things"などはやっぱりペギーの歌で聴いておきたいです。 "This Is a Very Special Day" では作詞だけでなく作曲もこなしていますがとてもチャーミングな曲です。 また、"Take a Little Time to Smile"や"I Don't Know Enough About You"は既に別れて10年以上も経つデイヴ・バーバーとの共作曲です。 『THE FABULOUS』は"Johnny Guitar"が公式なアルバムに収められた最初の盤ですね。ちなみにこの映画『大砂塵のテーマ』は邦題が"ジャニー・ギター"でした、通常なら"ジョニー・ギター"と成って当然なのに発音通りに記された珍しい邦題だと思いました。 |

| <1957-1968> Deccaを離れて再びCapitolへ戻って、ここで'57年から'72年までの15年間という長い年月に膨大な数の曲を録音しました。 この第二期Capitol時代の前半５〜６年間はDecca時代から引き継いでジャズヴォーカルを堪能できるアルバムを連発しています。 こうして、ジャズ・スタンダードを中心に歌っていた時代から徐々にポップス畑の曲を歌うように成っていきますが、だいたい'64年、'65年辺りが境ですので、ビートルズの全米上陸時と重なるのは興味深いところです。 普通、ジャズ歌手がポップス畑、ロック畑の曲を取り上げる場合は伴奏はジャズ・アレンジで自分なりの解釈で歌う事が常識の中で、ペギー・リーは自然に歌うという自らの唱法でありながら、原曲の雰囲気を崩さ無ぬように歌い続けました。 でも、ベニー・グッドマン楽団時代からその唱法は個性的でしたし、その頃から20年経とうが30年経とうがずっと変わらぬ唱法で歌い続けておられた事の方が嬉しい想いがします。バックの伴奏アレンジがジャズであるか無いかだけの違いですから。 移籍第一弾のアルバムは『The Man I Love』、タイトルソングはジョージ・ガーシュイン（作詞はお兄さんのアイラ・ガーシュイン）、編曲はネルソン・リドル、指揮がフランク・シナトラと質プラス話題性でセールス的にも順調な滑り出しをしています（ビルボードアルバムチャートで最高位20位）。 余談ですが、わたしの持っている日本盤ＬＰは当時の東芝音楽工業(現東芝EMI)のジャズ・ヴォーカルシリーズのラインナップの中から３枚だったか４枚だったかを買ってタスキの応募券を送ると貰えたプレゼント品です。（東芝は21世紀に成ってからもクラシックのシリーズＣＤで同様の企画をしてくれました） そして続いての『Jump for Joy』が個人的には一番好きなペギー・リーのアルバムと成ります。デューク・エリントンの軽快なスウィング・ナンバーから始まるこのアルバムは『Black Coffee』や『Beauty and the Beat』の影に隠れがちですが、勿論ペギー・リーの代表作のひとつでしょう。"Just in Time","What a Little Moonlight Can Do(月光のいたずら)","Cheek to Cheek"などのスタンダードは特に良いですね。 続いての『Things Are Swingin'』『I Like Men!』は『Jump for Joy』の続編、続々編といった感じです。そして、ジョージ・シアリングとマイアミで競演録音した『Beauty and the Beat』、これは『Black Coffee』よりも好きだと言われる人達が多い程の有名盤です。わたしの好きなコール・ポーターの曲も２曲歌われていますし、選曲が良くてジャズの楽しい部分を充分に味わえます。 '60年に入りいきなり５枚のアルバムを発売して（持っていないアルバムに『All Aglow Again!』『Christmas Carousel 』が有ります）絶好調を維持、'61年にはQuincy Jonesと組んで『If You Go』を出しました、これもバラード系が好きな人には人気盤です。次も同じくQuincy Jonesと組んだ『Blues Cross Country』、こちらは異色の企画盤、B面一曲目の"Goin' to Chicago Blues"が何故か好きです。 '63年には『Mink Jazz』と題されたジャズ・アルバムが出された訳ですが、以後、徐々にジャズ曲が減っていくというペギー・リーの録音経歴からみても、バック演奏の面から見ても（オーケストラじゃなくジャズコンボ）凄く印象に残る好きなアルバムです。特に印象的なのはBenny Golsonがジャズ・メッセンジャーズ時代に書いた名曲"Whisper Not"。これはWinton Kellyのピアノトリオ盤で最初に聴いた曲ですがとても好きな曲です。 次の『I'm a Woman』ではFats Dominoの"I'm Walkin'" などR&Rを歌い、以後少しずつロック・ポップス系の物を取り入れ初めましたが、'65年から'68年頃のアルバムはジャズっぽい物との混合的な作品が多いのか 中途半端な面が無きにしも有らずと言ったところでしょうか、この時代のは一旦買い漏らすとなかなか再発はされませんでした。 ちなみにＣＤ再発盤で買った『Latin a La Lee』に入っている"Till There Was You"はMeredith Willsonがミュージカル『The Music Man』の中の曲として書いた物ですが、ビートルズのポールが気に入ってこのペギー・リーの録音を参考にビートルズのレパートリーにしました。 |

| <1969-2002> '60年代中期から後半にかけてはジャズ（モダンジャズ）そのものが移り変わろうとして時代でありました。 Albert AylerやJohn Coltraneが突き進んでいった"精神音楽の世界"とジャズ本来ののメインストリームを引っ張っていたMiles Davisのロック・リズム導入、電気楽器化などです。 ペギー・リーのアルバム作りも'64年・'65年位からロックサウンドを少しずつ取り入れ出しましたが、寄せ集め的で、まだ模索中の域を進んでいた時代のアルバムだったように感じます。 それが、'69年の『A Natural Woman』ではBillie Holidayの"Don't Explain"をブルージーにブルーズ・ロック風味をきかせた快唱で歌ったり、Tyrone Davisの"Can I Change My Mind?(心変わりがしたくて)"やPercy Mayfieldの"Please Send Me Someone to Love"などR&B・Bluesクラシックスを、更には当時ヒットしたてのOtis Reddingの"The Dock of the Bay"などを取り上げ、ソウル・ブルーズ寄りな選曲中心で構成されています。そして、ペギーの歌はどれも素晴らしく、'60年代後半作群では飛び抜けてわたしの好きなアルバムです。(タイトル曲はCarole Kingだし、Randy Newmanの曲も取り上げています） 『A Natural Woman』はそんなに売れたアルバムでは無いながらも、それまでの数作前の作品群よりは随分とアルバムとしての一貫性が出てきました。 これはポップスの分野におけるアルバム作りの姿勢の変化と時を同じにしているのが面白いです。（シングル曲の寄せ集めとか、目玉曲プラスおまけ曲でアルバムを作っていた'60年代も後半に入りBeatlesの"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"辺りからアルバムとしての一貫性を持たせた製作に変わって来ていました） そしてそれからの５作（Capitol時代の最終期）はポップス・ロック系中心な選曲で良質なヴォーカル・アルバムを連続して出しました。アルバムは再びチャートに入るようになり、シングル曲"Is That All There Is?"はポップチャートでも11位、アダルト・コンテポラリーチャートでは１位に成るヒットとなり'69年のグラミー賞、最優秀女性ヴォーカル賞を獲得しました。 George Harrison、Lennon & McCartney、Paul Simon、David Gates、Burt Bacharach、Michel Legrand、Randy Newman、Paul Anka、Neil Sedaka、Lesley Duncan、L. Russell & B. Bramlett・・・この時代、歌われた曲の作者はロック・ポップス界の大物ばかりです。（この傾向は'70年代後半まで続きます。） Capitol時代最後の６枚、ジャズ感覚は味わえませんがどれも楽しめる好盤です。 以後Capitolを離れていろいろなレーベルからポツポツと発売されるように成ります。 '74年にAlanticから出た『Let's Love』はポール・マッカートニーがペギー・リーに贈った曲で、この曲のみピアノもポールが弾いて参加しています。 '77年の『Peggy』はフランス映画のＢＧＭのような作りでしっとりしたサウンドに乗り、ペギー・リーの声は以前にも増して若々しくて昔に逆戻りしていく様でした。 そして、わたしは持っていませんが'77年に発売されていたライブアルバムでは再びCole Porterの曲を歌っていますし'79年の"Close Enough for Love"はコンボ演奏でジャズアルバムです。再びジャズを歌い始めたペギー・リーでしたが、この後'81年に映画『Sharky's Machine(シャーキーズ・マシーン)』の挿入曲を１曲だけ録音して、自身のアルバム製作は暫く途絶えます。おそらくこの頃から心臓を患われて居たのかも知れません。なにしろ既に還暦に成ろうかというお歳だったのですから。 長い沈黙の後発売されたカムバック作『Miss Peggy Lee Sings the Blues』でもコンボ演奏をバックにWilliam Christopher Handy、Spencer Williams等の古典ブルーズとBillie Holidayの歌を歌っているのですが凄い出来で、とても67〜68歳の声とは思えません。（何度か心臓の手術を受けながらも74〜75歳まではステージに立ち歌われていたそうです） 『There'll Be Another Spring』というアルバム（持っていません）を挟んでの『Moments Like This』がラスト・レコーディングと成りますが、伴奏の大きさと（ペギー・リーの）声の大きさのバランスが悪くて聴きにくい感じです。病でこの声の小ささが本来に成っていて、そして補正無しで発売されたのかも知れませんが・・・ |

| <Selection Album> ここからはオリジナルな形で発売された物ではなく、編集盤として発売された物です。 LP時代に買った最初の二種はCapitol音源の物で米盤と日本盤、米盤はジャズっぽい物が多く、日本盤は邦題に『ペギー・リー映画主題歌を歌う』と付いているように映画音楽が主ですが、それにしてはビートルズの"The Long and Winding Road"、"Something"はどう考えても変です。解説には『レットイットビー』と『バングラ・デシュのコンサート』からの一曲となっていました。どちらも演奏シーンで歌われた物ですし、おまけにそれぞれに"Let It Be","Bangla Desh"という主題歌と呼んでもおかしくないタイトルソングが有るので、売らんが為の強引な選曲がどうしても目に付きます。 『Best 22 Songs』はＣＤ時代に入ってから初のデッカ時代のベスト国内選曲盤、好み曲に漏れたのは有りますが、一応は無難な選曲でした。 『Best 20』もＣＤ時代に入ってから初のCapitol音源のベスト盤ですが、有名曲中心のポピュラーファン向けな選曲でした。それにしても10年近く経って出された東芝の国内盤の使用写真が全く同じスチールだというのは、いかにも「取りあえず発売しておこう」といった内部事情が見えてきて淋しい気がします。 数年置いて買ったアメリカ編集の『The Best of Peggy Lee the Capitol Years』はジャズファン向けの選曲で日米の発売会社の見解の違いがはっきり出た感じです。 曲的には"Whisper Not"、"Goin' To Chicago"など他ではあまり選ばれないような好きな曲が入っていたのが嬉しかったです。 2002年にEMI/Capitolが発売した『Chiristmas』は1960年に発売されたオリジナル・クリスマスソング集『Christmas Carousel』（持っていません）をベースにされているのは明らかです。 曲数が減って'67年に少しヒットした"Happy Holiday"を加えて再編集盤で出されたクリスマスソング集です。 |
