CANDI STATON

　キャンディ・ステイトン(Candi Staton)もベティ・ライトやミリー・ジャクソンと同様、わたしにとってはデビュー間もない頃から聴き始めていたシンガーで、新譜情報で新録発売のニュースを読むと、「リスナーという一方的な立場」からのみの想いですが同窓会の知らせが届いた時の気分をダブらせてしまいます、ふと`80年代前半の頃を想い出しますし、聴き返してみたくなります。
　今年2006年に発売された『His Hands』で、南部サウンドに包まれてゆったりとスロー・バラードを歌うキャンディ・ステイトンと再会出来ました。
　ナッシュヴィル、Beech Houseで録音された様ですので勿論カントリー色も随所で感じられますが、淡々と流れるゆったりとしたリズムはむしろミシシッピーのMalacoサウンドを連想させてくれます。
　若い頃の様に絞り出す様なシャウトこそ聴けないものの独特のハスキーさは健在ですしむしろ、淡々と歌う今の彼女に共感さえおぼえました、『When Hearts Grow Cold』が特に好きですね。

　キャンディ・ステイトンは1943年３月13日アラバマ州ハンスヴィル生まれ（1945年と書かれた資料もありました）だとの事ですのでミリー・ジャクソンとは一年違いの同年代（ベティ・ライトはソウル界では異例の10代半ばデビューでした）シンガーです。　多くの後のソウルシンガー達が子供の頃にゴスペルを歌って居たのと同様キャンディも教会で歌って居たのですが、姉に連れられて遊びに行ったクラブで偶然歌った、アレサ・フランクリンのヒット曲が聴衆に気に入られて、毎週歌うことに決まったとか。
「ふと歌った」とか「偶然口ずさんだ」歌声が気に入られて・・・といったデビュー話はソウル界に多いのでしょうね。
　キャンディ・ステイトンの場合はまだ続きが有って、そのクラブに歌いに来ていたメインのクラーレンス・カーターにも気に入られたのです。暫く彼の前座として歌い続けた後、彼の口利きでFameレーベル所有者のリック・ホールに紹介されました。
　このFameレーベルがキャンディ・ステイトンのソロデビュー最初のレコード会社だったという事は、とてもラッキーだったと言えます。のちのちサザン・ソウルを語るとき必ず出てくるFameレーベルの看板シンガーと成り得て、90年代後半以降、知名度は年月を重ねる毎に上がりました。

　そのFameからの念願のデビューは69年、"I'd Rather Be an Old Man's Sweetheart/For You"ですが、（Ｂ面曲は残念ながら未聴）ヒットして当然の様な歌唱です。キャンディ・ステイトンの声質はどちらかというと一本調子で変化に乏しいタイプですがそのハスキーさはもの凄く魅力的です。バックはシンプルなほどその声質が生きて来ると思えるのですが、どうでしょう？
　Warnerに移籍後、ニューヨークやフィラデルフィア、ロスなどのスタジオで煌びやかなバックの元にダンサブルなヒット曲を出しましたが、ヴォーカル物としての魅力はFame時代とは比べものには成らないほどです。
　Fameはキャンディ・ステイトン在籍時に配給会社がCapitolからUnited Artistsに移っていまして、ここらの事情が2004年にＣＤ化されたFame音源集でも収録されなかった曲が出た原因でしょうか？（Ann Sextonがカヴァーした"Lovin' You Lovin' Me" などは入っていません）
このＣＤでの収穫はシングル"I'm Just a Prisoner"のＢ面曲として発表されていた"Heart on a String"でした。カントリー色が強く歌い方も素晴らしくお気に入りと成りました。
アナログ時代をも含めて未アルバムか曲もまだいくつか有るFame音源ですのでまたいつか出して欲しいものです。
　ところで、このFameでヒットを出していた時期にクラーレンス・カーターと結婚していたとの事ですが、南部を離れてニューヨークなどで録音をする頃には、どうやら離婚していたらしいです。
　Warner移籍後の一作目『CANDI』だけはリック・ホールがプロデュースしていますし、録音もマスル・ショールズのFameスタジオが中心とFame時代の延長線上に有る録音です。
　76年から80年頃までのWarner時代はわたしとしてはそう何度も聴きたくなる曲が無く、惰性で「新譜が発売されたから買う」といった買い方をしていた時でした。

　５枚のディスコ・シーン用アルバムをWarnerから出した後、Sugarhillに一時移籍しました。Warner時代の曲調を次ぎながらも意識的に南部サウンドを取り入れた回帰風潮を感じましたが、ここでは一作のみのリリースと成りました。
　83年以降はBeracahというキャンディ・ステイトンのゴスペルソングやゴスペルに関する書物を主体に扱う会社で製作される様に成っています。
　ここでのＬＰは大手の配給が無いままでしたので、大きな輸入盤専門店にこまめに足を運んでいないと買い逃しが起こりそうな程、日本には入る数が極端に少なかったですし、次第にキャンディの名前も忘れられたかの様に成っていました。
（わたしも『LOVE LIFTED ME』を買い逃してしまいました、ジャケットカヴァーには見覚え有りましたし、明らかに買い漏らしですね。----これはＣＤ時代に入り、2-in-1CDにて、2004年にＣＤ化されました）
　80年代にBeracahから出されたのは５種のアルバムだったと思いますが、どれもベースにはゴスペル色が強く地味さも漂いますが、彼女の歌を、ヴォーカルを聴くのなら当に適した作りです。音的には後半の『SING A SONG』あたりからは徐々にゴスペルを意識しないサウンドに成ってきています。

　90年代前半には新譜発表の形跡もなく５～６年は録音しなかったようです。90年代後半からイギリスを中心にサザン・ソウル系の旧譜発掘ＣＤ化が相次ぎ（良い物は時代を超えて良い---の言葉通りですね）、し出した頃に再び新譜がポツポツと出されだしました。
（私的には、この時代に『IT'S TIME』と題されたＣＤを未購入のまま買い漏らしが有ります）
　97年の『COVER ME』はまだ、ゴスペル色がかなり残った作りですが、『OUTSIDE IN』以降は再度音楽マーケットを意識した作りに成りまして、バックサウンドがカチャカチャドスドス鳴り響いています。（個人的には好みでない音です）

　そして、また年月は流れて2006年に最初に触れた『HIS HANDS』の出会えました。
更にキャンディがFameでソロデビューする以前にMinaretレーベルに吹き込んでいたデュエット曲の入ったコンピレーションＣＤも2006年に発売されました。
